Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Kellie, a North Dakota native, neurospicy visual artist with a passion for bright colors and silly things.

I grew up in Valley City, ND, spent a decade as a cheesehead in Madison, WI, and moved back to Moorhead with my hubby and son a number of years ago. We also have a border collie named Moe, who is our sweet little sour patch gal that yells a lot. We sure do love our spicy goober, though.

I am a natural hermit and like to spend my free time tinkering about the house, creating things, tending to my plants, and listening to spooky podcasts and anything history-related. When I leave my goblin cave, I enjoy spending quiet time in the woods, hunting for thrifty store scores, and finding fun new places to explore with the fam.

Describe what type of products you make under Kpheck Studios?

Here in my private studio in Moorhead, I’m kind of all over the place. I am an illustrator, abstract painter, amateur photographer, and creative connection elf.

What is a word that best describes you?

A perfect word to describe me? I’d have to say “reSILLYent” (get it, resilient and silly mushed together?) I’m tough to knock down and also a very silly goose.

How did you get started with your handcrafted business?

I have been creating for as long as I can remember, doodling on newspapers, making my own comic books as a kid, and creating stories to go along with my drawings. Art has always been a safe space for me to explore emotions and find a little peace from this very busy brain.

I started Kpheck Studios in 2020 after a painfully long artistic block and haven’t looked back since.

What advice would you give to someone else looking to start a handcrafted/maker business?

Follow your gut and trust in your process. It is not for the faint of heart, but if you truly want it, be patient, work towards your goal, and have faith in yourself. Also, listen to those gut twinges when something is telling you a project or business relationship doesn’t align with your path.

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

If I could give myself advice five years ago, I’d tell her to ask for more advice, haha!

What are your personal favorite items you’ve created so far?

My favorite thing I’ve created? Besides the abstract paintings where I intuitively play with supplies, I’d have to say the Art After Dark/Artsy Fartsy Markets.

What is something you’ve enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?

I have really found a ton of chosen family through these things and have been able to watch others meet and grow friendships and celebrate each other. It’s a pretty heart-sparkly feeling.

What is the most challenging thing?

One of the more difficult things I’ve ever done: I would have to say, in my earlier days, a piece that I did on commission that I just struggled with through the whole process. It was an abstract painting in a color palette that wasn’t really me, and the communication aspect was difficult. Thankfully, they loved it, but man, it made me sweaty a couple of times!

You host the Artsy Fartsy Markets, workshops, and Doodle Nights, and keep people getting creative and sharing their own work! Can you tell us more about those and how people can find more info?

Along with the markets mentioned earlier, I also host classes and mini workshops in my studio, as well as Doodle Club nights at various places around town through our collective group, FM Underdog Artists. It’s a group of eclectic creatives that have just kind of randomly found each other and started doing cool stuff together, and inviting anyone who wants to join along with us!

What is your most popular item you sell currently?

As far as what I make and sell, I would have to say my most popular items are my sweet-and-spicy woodblocks and stickers. But, my main focus has primarily been on markets and trying to create more community art events.
