For Mike Hagstrom, the values of faith, family, and community were instilled early in life. Growing up on a farmstead in west-central Minnesota as one of five children, Mike learned the importance of hard work, compassion, and service. His mother, a dedicated teacher, inspired his appreciation for education and the vital role it plays in shaping lives.
Meet JP II Catholic Schools President Mike Hagstrom!

Mike Hagstrom has devoted his career to Catholic education and fostering a strong sense of community within St. John Paul II Catholic Schools. A native of west-central Minnesota, Mike’s journey began as an English major at Saint John’s University. After earning his BA and later a Master’s in Systematic Theology, he embarked on a lifelong mission to help young people grow academically, spiritually, and personally. With over 30 years of teaching experience and now nearly a decade as president of JPII Catholic Schools, Mike oversees a growing and engaged five-school system that serves more than 1,200 students. Together with his wife, Shawn, and their two children, Mike values the power of education to inspire faith and excellence in the Fargo-Moorhead community.
“It’s inspiring to see the impact our teachers and programs have. Our students take those lessons of faith and service into their families, their careers, and their communities.” – Mike Hagstrom
“I grew up in a small town. It was the kind of place where everybody knew everybody. There was a real sense of belonging and shared purpose, and that shaped me in a lot of ways,” Mike said.
After graduating from Morris High School, Mike attended Saint John’s University in Collegeville, MN, where he pursued a degree in English. Active in numerous campus activities, including serving as editor of the school newspaper, Mike initially envisioned a career in journalism.
However, a serendipitous opportunity led him down a different path. Encouraged by one of the monks at St. John’s who recognized his ability to connect with young people, Mike accepted a role directing youth programs at Holy Rosary Parish in Detroit Lakes, MN. What started as a temporary plan quickly became a calling.
“I thought it would just be for a year,” Mike said. “But it was so fulfilling to see young people grow in their faith and maturity. That’s what really set me on this path for the rest of my career.”
“We are a real community. We celebrate together, we mourn together, and we support each other through challenges and triumphs.” – Mike Hagstrom
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
In 1985, Mike and his wife, Shawn, moved to Fargo, where Mike began teaching religion at Shanley High School. Over the next 31 years, he built quite the resumé as a dedicated educator, coach, and student council advisor. Whether leading a classroom discussion or organizing mission trips, Mike sought to inspire students academically, spiritually, and personally.
“Education is about the whole person. It’s not just academics,” he said. “It’s forming relationships, fostering service, and helping students discover their purpose.”
During this time, Mike continued his own education, earning a master’s degree in systematic theology from Saint John’s University in 1994. His dual focus on academics and faith became the cornerstone of his teaching philosophy.
Leading The JP II Catholic Schools
In 2016, Mike was named President of St. John Paul II (JP II) Catholic Schools, a five-school system serving the Fargo-Moorhead area. The role also includes serving as director of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Fargo, overseeing a total of 14 schools across the region.
Under Mike’s leadership, the JP II Catholic Schools have grown to include over 1,267 students, including preschoolers in the Little Deacons program. Enrollment has increased by 10% in the past two years, a testament to the system’s strong reputation and commitment to its mission.
“Families pick us because they value a Catholic education that integrates faith, learning, and service,” he said. “We try to take a holistic approach that supports students in every area of their lives.”
Mike is particularly proud of the school system’s efforts to make education accessible to all families. Nearly 30% of students receive financial aid, and the system has one of the most affordable tuition rates among non-public schools in the area.
Building A Community of Faith and Excellence
Beyond academics, Mike recognizes the importance of fostering a strong sense of community within the schools. From mission trips and service projects to state championships and spring musicals, the JP II Catholic Schools create opportunities for students to grow together in faith, character, and camaraderie.

“We are a real community,” Mike said. “We celebrate together, we mourn together, and we support each other through challenges and triumphs.”
This sense of community extends to alumni as well. With over 6,000 graduates of Shanley High School, Mike often hears stories of how the Catholic education shaped their lives.
“It’s inspiring to see the impact our teachers and programs have,” he said. “Our students take those lessons of faith and service into their families, their careers, and their communities.”
Looking to The Future
As Mike leads the JP II Catholic Schools into their 143rd year, he is focused on preparing for the future while honoring the system’s rich history. Plans are already underway to celebrate the 150th anniversary in 2032, a milestone that will highlight the legacy of Catholic education in the region.
There are other responsibilities for Mike in his role, like addressing facility expansion and enrollment capacity to meet the growing demand for Catholic education.
“It’s a good problem to have. But we need to be good stewards of our resources while making sure we can serve as many families as we can,” he said.
