Amy Zundel is Leading West Fargo’s Parks & Progress

Amy Zundel brings a unique blend of leadership, passion, and community involvement to her roles as both executive director of the West Fargo Park District and as well as a city commissioner. A West Fargo resident for over a decade, she stepped into the Park District role in December 2024, following a long career as a sports chiropractor and business owner. With experience in recreation, nonprofit work, and government affairs, Amy sees this position as the perfect intersection of her skills and interests—which includes creating and supporting an active community.

Originally from Bismarck, ND, Amy earned her undergraduate degree at NDSU before completing graduate studies in St. Louis. She and her husband, Keenan, a patrol sergeant for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, are raising their two boys, Avery and Brooks, in a community they deeply love. Whether overseeing the city’s 30-plus playgrounds, engaging with residents at park events, or shaping long-term growth strategies, Amy is dedicated to making West Fargo an active, thriving place for families. With her commitment to collaboration and efficiency, she’s focused on ensuring that both the Park District and city development align to best serve the community.

Armour Park: A Peaceful Escape With A Sweet Treat

Looking for the perfect place to enjoy a Sandy’s Donut? Armour Park is the spot. “It is isolated from major roads, has full-grown trees, everything nature has to offer, and is one of West Fargo’s oldest parks,” Amy said. With its lush greenery and mature trees, it’s an ideal setting to unwind, picnic, or, simply soak in the outdoors. Whether you’re stopping by for a break or bringing the kids to run around, Armour Park is a classic West Fargo destination.

Rustad Recreation Center: The Heart Of The Community

Rustad Recreation Center is truly a community hub. “In my opinion, a measurable pulse of our community,” Amy said. The center offers an indoor, year-round playground, a 35×70 turf field, a free walking track, and even free coffee in the mornings. One of its standout programs is the SAIL (Staying Active and Independent for Life) class. “One of the coolest things about the facility is the SAIL class we offer on MWF on the turf for free. You can show up and see about 100 seniors enjoying community and recreation together.”

Rendezvous Park: A Recreational Wonderland

With endless activities to enjoy, Rendezvous Park is a true West Fargo treasure. “Home to two playgrounds nestled in one park! It was just renovated in 2024 and includes 8 outdoor pickleball courts, a skate park, 6 baseball diamonds, a soccer and flag football area, a skating rink and warming house, 3 first-come, first-serve open shelters to the public, and a bridge that overlooks a beautiful pond, and an 18-hole disc golf course. All for free!” Amy said. A unique perk? “There are also over 2.5 miles of walking trails here.”

West Fargo’s Orchards: Free Fruit & Nature’s Beauty

West Fargo is home to an unexpected natural delight—community orchards! “The city of West Fargo has 10 orchards (adding another one this summer),” Amy said. “One is currently on park property in collaboration with the city (Charleswood Walking Path between 7th Street E and 8th Street E, South of 15th Ave E) and features apples, pears, plums, and cherries. The new one they are adding will also be on park property.”

Elmwood Park: Baseball, Nature & River Views

“My favorite park is Elmwood. My kiddos play baseball, and I love spending summer evenings there,” she said. The park’s location along the river makes it a scenic spot where visitors often fish. “There are mature beautiful trees of all different varieties flourishing. There is also 2.25 miles of walking trails.” Home to West Fargo Baseball, Elmwood is well-known for Young Field, featuring a turf infield and grass outfield with an ivy fence in left field.
